6 Great Games We Loved…But Never Finished
We’ve all been there. You fire up a game, get sucked into its world, fall in love with the story or combat…and then, somehow, somewhere along the way, you just stop playing. Maybe life got in the way. Maybe a tough boss did. Or maybe another game came out that bogarted your attention. We’re diving into the gaming graveyard; those titles we truly enjoyed but never managed to finish.
1. The Outer Worlds
From the makers of Fallout: New Vegas, The Outer Worlds is a first-person sci-fi RPG set in a dystopian, corporate-run solar system. We were fully onboard for space capitalism and sarcastic companions, but the game's bad luck was launching around the same time as The Outer Wilds. Confused names, mismatched expectations, and a strong competitor left us drifting. But, even with that said, we’re excited to see what they bring us for the sequel, coming soon!
2. Prey
Prey is a cerebral sci-fi horror shooter that takes place aboard a space station infested with shapeshifting aliens known as Mimics. We loved the clever mechanics (like spraying foam to build makeshift platforms) and the constant paranoia that every coffee mug might kill us. But despite a couple of deep runs, we always got sidetracked before the credits rolled. And we didn’t even find the time to try out Prey: Mooncrash! We know what we’re doing this weekend…
3. Outlast 2
A relentlessly terrifying first-person horror game that drops you in the middle of a cult-infested rural nightmare. We pushed through the panic, ran for our lives, and clutched our controller in fear…until one level got too frustrating. We swore we’d come back and beat it. We didn’t. But Outlast Trials is a different story. We can’t get enough of it!
4. Hogwarts Legacy
An open-world action RPG set in the wizarding world of Harry Potter, long before Harry was even born. We were surprised by how much we enjoyed spell-slinging through castle corridors. But after one too many identical enemy camps and a marathon of Merlin Trials, our wands hit the wall and the magic faded. Wingardium Levios…ahhh, we’re tired.
5. Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night
A 2.5D Metroidvania from Castlevania legend Koji Igarashi, packed with demons, upgrades, and gothic flair. This one is an absolute gem for genre fans—until you take a break and forget how to play. We made it close to the end, but after losing our rhythm and repeatedly getting wrecked, we just couldn’t make it back. Dawn broke and we moved on, though we’re still clamoring for a sequel to not finish, too!
6. Metaphor: ReFantazio
An ambitious and stylish fantasy RPG from the creators of Persona, blending turn-based combat with social systems. We played on the hardest difficulty, made it to the final boss, and nearly won! Then we died and got kicked back to the start of a 75-minute fight. No autosave. No mercy. No chance we were doing that again.
